First Day of School Letter

        Dear Parents:
I am pleased to welcome you to the new school year 2026-2027 at Linda Verde Dual Immersion School.
My name is Yolanda Rodriguez Landeros. I feel honored to be your 6th-grade child's teacher and to be part of the academic and civic formation of your children.

        Plato’s educational theory
Knowledge should be acquired progressively, with education structured at different levels according to each individual's abilities and talents (The Republic; Jaime Escalante, a Bolivian teacher who believed that his students could succeed despite the circumstances)

My teaching philosophy is, no human being should lose the opportunity to have access to education, since it will be one of the ways to improve society and enhance the human quality of each individual.

        My education:
I have a Bachelor's in Spanish Language and Culture and Chicano Studies from CSUN. Also, I have my master's in Peninsular and Latin American Literature from CSUN as well. Right now, I am working on my Multiple Subject Credential at CSUB.

My part will consist of contributing knowledge and professionalism to support and guide in the subjects of Social Studies and Spanish Language Arts. This instruction will be strictly aligned with the educational standards of the state of California in bilingual education. This will be in order to meet the learning objectives required both by the state and by the expectations of the school and the School District.

However, my work wouldn't be completely successful without your support. The parents are the ones who will put in the greatest effort to ensure that educational goals are fully achieved. It is well known that students learn better with their parents' backing. When they feel trust and support at home, they will put it into practice in their academic instruction in the classroom.

That’s why I ask you to trust my work. For this, communication between teachers and parents is the key to meeting all our expectations, and this way we will achieve a high-quality education for your children.

Next, I will explain some policies, seating arrangements, and resources for families and students:

     Homework Policy:
Homework will be turned in on Mondays, and it is the responsibility of the students and parents to make sure to remind their children to hand in the packet every Thursday. Unless in medical or family cases, if the student has not finished the homework, I will give them one more day to turn it in.

      Independent Study:
If an independent study packet is required for a certain number of days of absence, I recommend letting the office know as soon as possible about the days of absence needed. That way, communication between the office and the teacher will be key to allowing enough time to prepare the independent study packet for the student.

NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to complete the assignments specified by the teacher in the packet. If the packet is incomplete, the student will receive partial credit, which will affect their grades.

    Classroom seating arrangements:
The organization of the space in my class is an essential factor in creating a pleasant environment and promoting student learning. The space is aligned with the needs of each student.

    For example:
The tables are designed for students to sit in groups of four. This way, interaction and cooperation among students in group projects or debates are encouraged. For students who have difficulty seeing the ViewSonic or whiteboard, a space at the front will be assigned so they can keep up with the learning pace of the whole group.

Differentiated instruction:

  • I adapt instruction and assessments depending on the needs and interests of the students, while also respecting each student's cultural diversity to maximize learning.
  • I will assess the students' academic level through initial diagnostics to understand their strengths and weaknesses and provide fair evaluations.
  • I will vary teaching methods by combining cognitive and visual approaches to create flexible groups that help them understand learning topics better.
  •  I will adjust the difficulty of tasks according to the students' needs and assign personalized projects aligned with their interests.
  • I will set clear, easy, specific, and accessible goals while respecting the way each student learns.
  • I will encourage students' autonomy so that they are able to choose the topics that interest them the most.
  • I will also teach them to self-assess using the rubrics I assign for each task. In this way, they will learn to analyze themselves and improve on future tasks or assignments.

Next, I’ll show you some of the resources available at Linda Verde to support families and students.

1.- Parent Square: Parent communications, school and district news.

2.- PIQUE Community Participation: Programs like PIQUE for community partners and academic success.

3.-  Emergent Bilingual Bridge to Success Program

4.- Free dental and vision check-up

  5.- NO COST ELO After-School / Non-School Day Program

  6.- After-School Clubs - Mariachi & Folklorico

7.- Informational meetings for parents. Title I, after-school programs, etc.

8.-  SBAC. California students take several mandated statewide tests. These tests provide parents/guardians, teachers, and educators with information about how well students are learning and becoming college and career ready. The test results may be used for local, state, and federal accountability purposes

The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are part of the state testing program called the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress or CAASPP. The CAASPP System is designed to give information to teachers, students, and their families about what students know and are able to do and whether they are on track to be ready for success in college or career when they graduate from high school.

9.- Foster Services and Assistance. School counselors recognize students in the foster care system are resilient, have many strengths, and may require additional support in obtaining resources, social/emotional care, academic planning, and college/career guidance. School counselors recognize it is their duty to be knowledgeable about legislation, resources, and needs for students in foster care.

10.- Students can earn ROAR Tickets for demonstrating positive behaviors. Staff members reward students through the PBIS Rewards Program.

Students can also earn rewards for excellence in certain subjects, attendance, turning in found items, and participation in various events, surveys, and meeting intervention goals.

                     Respect | Optimistic | Ambitious | Responsible

                                                  Ways of communication:
Our communication will mainly be through the Parent Square app. You can download this app on your cell phones, but if you have any trouble adding it to your phone, I recommend asking at the office. I ask for your patience in responding to your messages. I will read all your questions and reply as soon as possible, within 24 hours of the messages being sent. Unless it is an emergency, call directly to the main office at 661-942-0431.

I once again reiterate that at Linda Verde you will not only find my support, but also that of the administrative and staff personnel who professionally follow the academic and safety guidelines. The well-being of our students and their families is the most important thing. Finally, I encourage you to sign below to confirm that you received my information.

                            Differentiations and Assessments

Differentiations

  1. Present and explain the topic in different ways.

In this way, all students will have the chance to know what they will learn. For example, using graphic organizers, images, and videos. This way, each student will cover their needs and learn at their own pace but still follow the same group goal.

2.- Focus on the vocabulary that will be used in the lesson

The vocabulary that will be used in the lesson should be displayed on a list on the wall. Write it in large letters so that students can review it from their desks or get up to read it.

3.- Make collaborative work groups.

To practice, groups of no more than 4 students should be made, so they can share opinions and present them to the group. Or they can write their thoughts together on a piece of paper.

4.- Organize the activities step by step.

When you need to work on a specific topic that is difficult to understand, certain organizational steps should be followed so that students know how to start working.

5.- Expand the topic by giving more lesson content.

Once the students master the initial topic, ask them to do research on their own to broaden their knowledge of what they have learned.

Assessments:

1.- Give options for evaluation.

Ask students to give their best answer either in writing or by drawing. For students who have difficulty writing, drawing is a way to know if they are understanding.

2.- Provide language resources.

Use sentence frames to help students start writing and answer orally when questions are asked. This method is also very useful for ELD students since they can visualize how to start writing.

3.- Carry out simple and short assessments.

Simple assessments will help students gradually incorporate the knowledge they have gained during the lesson.

4.- Students will have their rubric.

By providing students with a copy of the rubric before giving the assessment, they will know which points they should focus on.

5.- Ask them to use sequence words in writing.

Asking them to write events in order will help them maintain reading comprehension.
